I don’t really post that often here besides from hour rule posts and dots pictures. So I just wanted to update you guys on a thing: I scored an apprenticeship as a mechanic starting this September and I’m excited as hell! I’ve never really wrenched on a car before but apparently my future boss liked what he saw in the three days of my internship there. Maybe I did the right thing and decided against going to university and doing this instead.
Just something I wanted to share since January.

Thanks! More than enough financial room fortunately. Been looking for a car ever since I signed my contract.

Congrats! With everybody going to uni only to get stuck in the internship vicious circle, learning a skilled trade might be the smart thing to do.
When can you do an oil change and swap my wheels?????

That was my point. I’m already kinda late to the party with 21 and wasting another couple of years? No thanks.
Right now. All the money my parents wasted at VW stealerships over the years for literally the simplest of things.

Aside this what does hour rule even mean? I’ve been posting here for years and don’t understand it.

Posting something so that no hour passes without a post. Iirc in the old days before I even knew Jalopnik and Oppo existed it was necessary to have at least one post per hour or otherwise servers shut down automatically(?). That’s not the case anymore but hour rules are still a thing.

My grandfather had a 309 when I was young, and then he sold it to a friend of his. So the car stayed in our small village from 1993 (when my grandfather bought it new) until last year, when it was scrapped. It still looked brand new, but the wife of the new owner started banging it into everything after her husband died.
I sort of wanted to buy it, but by the time I wanted to ask, it was already scrapped :(
Also, good luck on the apprenticeship, hope this means you finally buy a car :p

The 309 is a car that has always flew under the radar for me until recently. Good condition ones catch my attention as most of them have probably been scrapped by now.
Thank you! Seems like now that I am really serious about buying a car there’s nothing that I really want. Soon though

The 309 is veeery similar to the 205. Doors are even interchangable. So I support this. I also very strongly support chosing a line of work that you enjoy. We also need more mechanics that are more capable than mindlessly changing parts based on what the OBD2 seems to suggests.

Yeah, most are gone, just the fast ones seem to remain, lol. There used to be a very early one in my village too, but that’s also gone now :(
How about a 309 GTi?

Good luck man, congrats! I hope you catch up quickly! Just show them you want to learn and soak up as much knowledge as you can, the skills will come with practice.

The guys at my future workplace seemed really cool and capable. No OBD will help you with old Saab 99, Jags and G wagons that we had in the shop during my internship.

“How about a 309 GTi?”
How cheap/expensive do you expect a nice one of those to be?

Given the value of 205 GTi’s and the 309 GTi being rarer, I’d estimate around €9000-12000? (Which makes it less suitable as a first car, on a second glance)

The fast ones have either been ruined by questionable mods or wrapped around trees. I kinda like 80s and 90s French warm and hot hatches.

Congratulations and good luck in your endeavours!I kind of did something similar. Ultimately I’d want to end up doing something related to industrial design but in the meantime I went to school to become an electrician.
I hope the prices of those 309 GTI’s don’t rise too high in the future. My mom used to have a regular 309 and for that reason I think I’ve developed a soft spot for them.

Thank you! The main emphasis in those three years will be high voltage technology and electronic. I really can’t wait to start.
Well, fortunately the 309 GTi is on nobody’s radar as far as I can tell. But most 309 GTis and even regular 309s have been either abused and beaten to hell or scrapped. I’ve always liked the 309 GTi.
